Doug Corlew's introduction into the Martial Arts began at the age of 11 in Portland Oregon. He began practicing Korean Tang Soo Do under the instruction of Alan LaCross for 3 years earning a Junior Red Belt. After Mr. LaCross moved to Michigan, Sensei Corlew decided to enroll in the Japan Karate Federation to study Japanese Karate from Master Junki Yoshida from Japan. The next 5 years was spent learning Shindo Jinen Ryu (Ryobu-kai) Karate-do and bojutsu (the staff).
The During his training with Master Yoshida, Sensei Corlew competed in several AAU, USKF state, regional, and National Competitions. Titles include the 1984 and 1985 AAU Oregon State and Northwest Regional Kata & Kumite Medals and the 1986 and 1987 USAKF Oregon State and Northwest Regional Kata & Kumite, 1st Place Advanced Division and 5th place in Kumite at the 1987 National Championships. He also assisted in teaching kid's class for both Mr. LaCross and Master Yoshida.
Upon moving to Arizona to attend the University of Arizona in Tucson, Sensei Corlew continued with the Japan Karate Federation of Master Fumio Demura, the first person to introduce Shito-ryu to the USA. Since 1987, Master Demura has been an inspiration and guiding force in both Sensei Corlew's martial arts pursuits and life pursuits.
Even as a Brown Belt, he began teaching Karate classes during the evening at the University of Arizona Karate Club and The Tucson Japan Karate Federation from 1987 to 1992. Throughout college, Sensei Corlew also found time to compete in tournaments and win. He received a 1st degree Black Belt (February, 1991) in Shito-ryu Karate from Master Demura, and continued teaching in Tucson until he left in June of 1992.
Upon Graduating with a B.S in Engineering Mathematics from the University of Arizona, he was commissioned as an Ensign in the US Navy. Sensei chose his first duty station in Japan so he could continue his training in the martial arts. In Yokohama, Japan he was able to train at the dojo (training hall) that Master Demura trained at as a child. In addition to training with Sakagami Sensei at the Hombu Dojo, he also trained in Fushin Ryu Karate-do (lineage to Konishi, Otsuka, and Miyagi) and Daito-ryu Aiki Jujutsu Roppokai with Master Seigo Okamoto on the Yokosuka Naval Base until 1996.
In 1996, Sensei Corlew chose to work with the Marine Corps and live on Okinawa. He practiced and received rank in several martial arts to include:
- Motobu-ryu Udun-di Kobujutsu and Tuite (Grappling, Pressure Points and Weapons) under Seikichi Uehara (1904-2004)
- Ryukyu Kobudo (Okinawan Weapons) under Eisuke Akamine (1925-1999)
- Muso Shinden-ryu Iaido (Japanese Swordsmanship) under Hanshi Nishihara
- Mugai-ryu Iaido (Japanese Swordsmanship) under Hanshi Hamamoto
Motobu-ryu Udun-di under 93 year old Master Uehara was his main focus during his stay in Okinawa. Doug Corlew at the time was the only non Japanese training with O'Sensei Uehara, and the only American to be ranked by Master Uehara.
Sensei Corlew returned to the US in 1998 to work for the US Navy Tactical Training Group in San Diego. He continued his Shito-ryu Karate and Okinawan Kobudo training at Master Demura's dojo in Santa Ana, California, receiving his Nidan rank in February 1999. He also taught classes for disadvantage and at-risk youths in group homes in San Diego.
At the end of 1999, Sensei Corlew resigned his commission from the US Navy and was hired by Raytheon Missile Systems in Tucson, returning to his university home. Master Demura recognized Doug Corlew as an instructor (Sensei) and awarded him his Sandan rank in 2005. Since September 1999 he has been teaching Martial Arts to the Tucson community, through Parks & Recreation Classes, Self-Defense Seminars, and at his own dojo, 'The Dojo' in midtown Tucson. Though most of his time is spent teaching others, he continues to learn and compete in Karate-do and Kobudo because he is a student of the art as he was when he first started: 'The more I learn; I realize how little I know. Maybe in two or three lifetimes I will understand the art'.
Sensei Corlew's reputation as a karate teacher is strengthened by his open-mindedness, especially about the value of various forms of karate. He devotes his energy to the teaching of the martial arts. What marks this man is his intense desire to be fair and compassionate in teaching. He well understands the needs of every student and has them work toward their own personal goal by combining the traditions of the past with modern approaches to training.
